The Socky Bunch
By Janna, age 14
“The Socky Bunch! The Socky Bunch! That’s the way we became the Socky Bunch!!” Jessica sang in our tiny cabin. The three of us were cracking up. Our middle school was spending a week at Camp Hazen. It was the last night we’d be spending there, and we were playing with socks. It may seem like an odd thing to do, but I swear we aren’t completely nuts. It was late at night and we couldn’t fall asleep. Christine just happened to find a sock lying around, so she put it on her hand and started to talk with it. Jessica and I found socks and joined in. Jessica even started singing about socks.
We decided to sing as many “socky” songs that we could think of. We rewrote lyrics in our head and sang them to real tunes. The first one we thought up was to the tune of “The Brady Bunch”, which we renamed “The Socky Bunch”. I even taught them a song that was really about socks that we used to sing at my old school.
Along with doing sock things, we tried to scare each other. We would secretly knock on the cabin and say, “What’s that??” We imagined our teachers were staring at us through the windows. Those windows were very scary. They were right by our beds and you could imagine a lot of creepy things peeking in. At one point, we were hungry. So I gave Jessica and Christine a granola bar each. Later on, Christine, who wasn’t wearing her contacts, thought the granola bar was a gun. Jessica and I laughed at her. We also talked to our sleeping classmates, Jessie and Dani. They only responded once, though. Jessie opened her eyes a little and I said, “Hi, Jessie! It’s Socky!!” with the sock on my hand. She stared at me like I was stupid, mumbled “Hi”, and went back to sleep.
We stayed up until about four a.m. Until then I had disliked Camp Hazen. However, that night was so much fun that it made the trip all worthwhile. When we got back to school, we made all sorts of “socky” plans. We made names for ourselves: I’m Sockia, Jessica’s Socky, and Christine’s Socktina. We were planning on making a picture book called “Our Night at the Soxberry”, but we never got around to it. I even made a Socky Bunch website! I love socks. Whether they are stinky or clean, black or white, I will always carry a special spot in my heart for socks.
